Understanding the ECZ Grading & Best 6 System

The Examinations Council of Zambia operates a standardized 9-point grading scale for the Grade 12 School Certificate and General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations. Unlike percentage-based ranking where higher numbers indicate superior performance, in the ECZ numerical scale, lower numbers indicate higher academic distinction.

Official ECZ Grade 12 Grading Scale

Percentage Score Range ECZ Grade Official Classification Points Value Academic Significance
75% - 100% Grade 1 Distinction 1 Point Highest national performance standard
70% - 74% Grade 2 Distinction 2 Points Exceptional subject mastery
65% - 69% Grade 3 Merit 3 Points High competence above national benchmark
60% - 64% Grade 4 Merit 4 Points Solid upper-intermediate performance

50% - 54% Grade 6 Credit 6 Points Satisfies general tertiary admission baseline
