The Examinations Council of Zambia operates a standardized 9-point grading scale for the Grade 12 School Certificate and General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations. Unlike percentage-based ranking where higher numbers indicate superior performance, in the ECZ numerical scale, lower numbers indicate higher academic distinction.
| Percentage Score Range | ECZ Grade | Official Classification | Points Value | Academic Significance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 75% - 100% | Grade 1 | Distinction | 1 Point | Highest national performance standard |
| 70% - 74% | Grade 2 | Distinction | 2 Points | Exceptional subject mastery |
| 65% - 69% | Grade 3 | Merit | 3 Points | High competence above national benchmark |
| 60% - 64% | Grade 4 | Merit | 4 Points | Solid upper-intermediate performance |
| 55% - 59% | Grade 5 | Credit | 5 Points | Satisfies university entrance credit requirement |
| 50% - 54% | Grade 6 | Credit | 6 Points | Satisfies general tertiary admission baseline |
| 45% - 49% | Grade 7 | Satisfactory (Pass) | 7 Points | Secondary pass; does not count as higher tertiary credit |
| 40% - 44% | Grade 8 | Satisfactory (Pass) | 8 Points | Minimum secondary passing mark |
| 0% - 39% | Grade 9 | Unsatisfactory (Fail) | 9 Points | Candidate failed to satisfy minimum requirements |
