Paper 2 Significance

English Language Paper 2 carries crucial weight in determining your overall ECZ English grade. Summary Writing requires extracting specific key facts within strict word limits, while Comprehension requires precise textual location without copying irrelevant sentences.

1. Mastering Summary Writing

  • Read the Summary Prompt Carefully: Identify exactly what you are asked to summarize (e.g., "In not more than 120 words, summarize the causes and effects of deforestation as outlined in the passage.").
  • Underline Key Points: As you read the passage, underline ONLY points that directly answer the prompt. Ignore stories, illustrations, and decorative adjectives.
  • Write a Draft in Your Own Words: Connect key points using smooth transition words (Furthermore, In addition, Consequently, However).
  • Count Your Words: Write the total word count at the end of your paragraph (e.g., Word Count: 112 words). Do not exceed the specified maximum word limit!

2. Answering Reading Comprehension Questions

  • Locate Paragraph References: ECZ questions often direct you to specific paragraphs (e.g., "According to Paragraph 3..."). Focus strictly on that paragraph.
  • Be Specific and Direct: Avoid writing lengthy introductory phrases. Answer directly to the point.
  • Vocabulary in Context: When asked to explain a word or phrase as used in the passage, substitute your chosen synonym back into the original sentence to verify it makes grammatical sense.
