1. Grid References & Distance Measurement
Core Mapwork Techniques:
- 4-Figure Grid Reference: Identify the bottom-left corner of the target grid square. Read the two Easting numbers on the bottom axis followed by the two Northing numbers on the side axis (e.g., Grid Square 2445).
- 6-Figure Grid Reference: Divide the grid square mentally into tenths. Insert the extra tenth digit between Eastings and Northings (e.g., 243457).
- Straight Distance: Measure between two points with a transparent ruler in centimeters. Multiply by scale factor ($1\text{ cm} = 0.5\text{ km}$ on a 1:50,000 scale map).
- Curved Distance (River / Road): Use a straight piece of string or paper strip to trace bends along the feature, mark endpoints, then measure against the map linear scale bar.
2. Contour Line Interpretation & Landforms
Contour lines join places of equal height above sea level. The contour interval (difference between adjacent lines) is printed in the map key.
