Bonne Chance! Exam Strategy

Grade 9 French evaluates four core skills: Listening (Compréhension Orale), Reading (Compréhension Écrite), Speaking (Production Orale), and Writing (Production Écrite). Consistent daily vocabulary practice ensures a distinction.

1. Present Tense Verb Conjugation

Regular French verbs follow predictable ending patterns in the present tense (Le Présent):

Subject Pronoun -ER Verbs (Parler) -IR Verbs (Finir) -RE Verbs (Vendre)
Je / J'parlefinisvends
Tuparlesfinisvends
Il / Elle / Onparlefinitvend
Nousparlonsfinissonsvendons
Vousparlezfinissezvendez
Ils / Ellesparlentfinissentvendent

Essential Irregular Verbs

  • Être (To be): Je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont.
  • Avoir (To have): J'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont.
  • Aller (To go): Je vais, tu vas, il va, nous allons, vous allez, ils vont.
  • Faire (To do/make): Je fais, tu fais, il fait, nous faisons, vous faites, ils font.

2. The Passé Composé (Past Tense)

The Passé Composé narrates completed past actions. Structure: Subject + Auxiliary (Avoir or Être) + Past Participle.

Most verbs use Avoir:

J'ai mangé du nshima. (I ate nshima.) / Nous avons fini nos devoirs. (We finished our homework.)

Movement & Reflexive Verbs use Être (DR MRS VANDERTRAMP):

When using être, the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject:

  • Il est allé au marché. (He went to the market.)
  • Elle est allée à l'école. (She went to school - add 'e' for feminine).
  • Ils sont partis. (They left - add 's' for plural).

3. Articles & Possessive Adjectives

Category Masculine Singular Feminine Singular Plural
Definite (The) Le (L') La (L') Les
Partitive (Some) Du (De l') De la (De l') Des
My Mon Ma (Mon before vowel) Mes
Your (informal) Ton Ta Tes

4. Oral Examination Role-Play Practice

In the oral exam, candidates role-play everyday dialogues with the examiner:

Merci!

5. Guided Written Expression (Postcard / Lettre)

For written composition (60–80 words), memorize this reliable structure:

  1. Salutation: Cher ami Paul, / Chère amie Marie,
  2. Opening: Comment vas-tu? J'espère que tu vas bien. Moi, je vais très bien.
  3. Body paragraph: Describe a school event, holiday trip, or favorite sport in 3–4 sentences using both present and passé composé.
  4. Closing: Écris-moi vite! Amicalement, [Ton prénom].
Speaking Practice Tip

Practice speaking French aloud in front of a mirror for 10 minutes every day. Focus on clear pronunciation of silent letters at the ends of words (e.g. parlent is pronounced "parl", not "parl-ent").
