1. Timber Classification & Zambian Woods
Timber is broadly categorized into two distinct biological groups:

2. Woodworking Hand Tools
Hand tools in the woodworking shop are grouped by function:
- Marking & Measuring Tools: Steel rule (measuring lengths), Try square (testing $90^\circ$ right angles and marking square lines), Marking gauge (scoring lines parallel to an edge with a spur pin).
- Holding Devices: Woodworker's bench vice, G-cramp, Sash cramp (for gluing wide boards and doors).
- Cutting & Sawing Tools: Rip saw (cutting along the grain), Crosscut saw (cutting across the grain), Tenon saw (precision joint cutting with a brass back for stiffness), Coping saw (curved profiles).
- Planing Tools: Jack plane (rough reduction of timber size), Smoothing plane (final surface smoothing).
- Chiseling Tools: Firmer chisel (general mortising and paring), Bevel-edged chisel (cutting into acute corners like dovetails), Mortise chisel (heavy chopping of deep mortise slots).
3. Woodworking Joints
Candidates must identify and sketch these 5 standard woodworking joints:
A. Mortise & Tenon Joint
The strongest joint used in door frames, chair legs, and table stretchers. The tenon thickness is typically $\frac{1}{3}$ the thickness of the timber.
B. Halving Joint (Corner / T-Halving)
Half the thickness of each piece is cut away so that the surfaces finish flush. Used in picture frames and simple light frames.
C. Housing Joint (Through & Stopped)
A trench is cut into an upright piece into which a shelf end is inserted. Common in bookcases and shelving cabinets.
D. Dovetail Joint
Interlocking pins and tails offering high tensile resistance against pulling forces. Standard for high-grade drawer construction.
4. Metalwork Hand Tools & Operations
Metalworking at junior secondary level focuses on bench operations on mild steel and aluminum:
- Hacksaw: High-speed steel blade with forward-facing teeth. Standard blade pitch: 18 to 24 teeth per inch (TPI).
- Ball-peen Hammer: Used with center punches and for riveting sheet metal.
- Files: Categorized by cut (Single cut, Double cut) and grade (Bastard, Second cut, Smooth). Use safe-edge files to protect internal shoulders.
5. Workshop Safety Protocols
The ECZ syllabus places heavy emphasis on safety education:
- Always wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): safety goggles, leather apron, and closed leather boots.
- Never run or indulge in horseplay in the workshop.
- Secure work firmly in a vice before sawing, chiseling, or filing.
- Always chisel away from your body; never hold wood in front of a cutting edge.
- Keep pathways clear of sawdust, off-cuts, and grease spills.
Drawing Practice Task
Practice freehand isometric sketching of the Mortise and Tenon and Corner Halving joints on plain paper. Add 45-degree hatching lines to represent end-grain timber.
