Special Paper 1 carries equal weighting with Mathematics and English in Grade 7 cut-off selection for top national boarding and STEM technical secondary schools! Practice looking for 3 core changes: Movement (Rotation), Shading (Inversion), and Addition/Subtraction of Lines.

1. The 4 Fundamental Question Types

A. Analogies (A is to B as C is to ?)

Identify the transformation from shape A to shape B (e.g. inverted and shaded black), then apply the identical transformation to shape C.

B. Series & Progressions

A sequence of 4 shapes changing gradually. Identify the rule (e.g. a pointer rotates $45^\circ$ clockwise each step) to pick the 5th shape.

C. Odd-One-Out (Classification)

Five shapes are given; four share an underlying geometric property (e.g. all have an even number of sides or lines of symmetry), while one does not.

D. Matrix Completions

A $2 \times 2$ or $3 \times 3$ grid where shapes change logically along rows (horizontal) and columns (vertical). Find the missing piece in the bottom-right corner.

2. Spatial Rotations & Reflections

Mental rotation is the most frequently tested skill in Special Paper 1:

  • Clockwise Rotations: Turning in the direction of clock hands ($90^\circ = \text{quarter turn}$, $180^\circ = \text{half turn / upside down}$).
  • Anti-Clockwise Rotations: Turning in the reverse direction.
  • Reflection vs Rotation: A reflection creates a mirror image where left and right swap. A rotation preserves lateral handedness. Never confuse a rotated shape with its reflected mirror twin!

3. Matrix Grid Completion Logic

When solving a $3 \times 3$ matrix in ECZ Special Paper 1:

  1. Check Rows First: Look horizontally across row 1, then row 2. Is an element moving, disappearing, or being added?
  2. Check Columns Second: Verify your hypothesis vertically down column 1 and column 2.
  3. Count Elements: In many ECZ questions, each row contains exactly one circle, one square, and one triangle. Find which shape is missing from the 3rd row.

4. 3D Shape Nets & Paper Folding

Candidates must mentally fold a flat 2D pattern (net) into a 3D solid (cube or pyramid):

  • A cube has 6 square faces. In a standard cross net, opposite faces never touch directly; they are separated by one intervening square.
  • Look for symbols on opposite faces: If face with a star is opposite face with a circle, they can NEVER be visible next to each other on the assembled 3D cube!

5. Exam Hall Time Management

Special Paper 1 contains 60 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 60 minutes. That leaves exactly 1 minute per question:

  1. Use an HB pencil to shade the OMR answer sheet oval firmly and cleanly.
  2. Eliminate at least 2 obviously wrong answer choices within the first 15 seconds.
  3. Never leave an answer blank. There is no negative marking in ECZ exams.
